Summary

B. S. Daya Sagar received a BSc (1987) from the Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He received an MSc (1990) and a PhD (1994) from the Faculty of Engineering, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam. He worked in various positions at the College of Engineering, Andhra University, and the Centre for Remote Imaging Sensing and Processing (CRISP) at the National University of Singapore from 1992 to 2001. He served as Associate Professor and Researcher in the Faculty of Engineering & Technology (FET), Multimedia University, Malaysia during 2001-07. He is currently a Professor (Higher Administrative Grade, HAG) of the Systems Science and Informatics Unit (SSIU) at the Indian Statistical Institute and Head of the Indian Statistical Institute - Bangalore Centre (2023-27). He was the Founding Head of the SSIU.

Academic and Research Achievements: His research interests include mathematical morphology, GISci, digital image processing, fractals and multifractals and their applications in extraction, analyses, and modelling of geophysical patterns. He has published over 90 papers in journals and has authored and guest-edited 12 books and special theme issues for journals. He wrote a book entitled "Mathematical Morphology in Geomorphology and GISci," CRC Press: Boca Raton, 2013, p. 546. He recently co-edited a special "Filtering and Segmentation with Mathematical Morphology" issue for the IEEE Journal on Selected Topics in Signal Processing (v. 6, no. 7, p. 737-886, 2012). His book "Handbook of Mathematical Geosciences: Fifty Years of IAMG", Springer Publishers, p. 942, 2018, crossed the downloads of 1.11 million. He edited the two-volume Encyclopedia of Mathematical Geosciences, 1744 pages, Springer Nature International AG, Switzerland, 2023.

Other Contributions: As a Deputy Chairman of the Centre for Applied Electromagnetics (CAEM) at Multimedia University-Malaysia, he developed a group of young researchers to design algorithms for surficial mapping and terrestrial characterization. As a Founding Head of the Systems Science and Informatics Unit (SSIU) that was set up in 2009 at the Indian Statistical Institute, he has set up the Spatial Informatics Research Group that provides a forum for researchers, engineers, and practitioners in all applications that involve spatial information. He is a member of various examination, administrative, recruitment, and promotional committees and the Board of Studies and has been a course coordinator for different subjects that he taught to undergraduate students. Apart from this, he served as a member of the committee on board marks normalization in India - A significant education reform to improve the inclusiveness of education in India. He was on adjudicating panels for over fifty PhD students. He secured funding from India, the French Govt., and the Malaysian Govt from 1995 to 2018. He designed a syllabus for elective subjects. He has organized 12 international conferences, workshops, tutorials, and summer/winter schools on mathematical morphology and spatial informatics topics. Earth Science academic associations and societies received essential contributions from Sagar, who founded the Bangalore Section IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Chapter in India, under which several lectures by distinguished lecturers are organized. He has been actively collaborating with foreign academics and scientists, not only to nurture young students but also to popularize the subjects of mathematical earth sciences and geospatial data sciences. Sixteen students under his supervision have been awarded PhD degrees. He has been involved in regular teaching subjects like remote sensing, digital image processing, mathematical morphology, and Geographical Information Science–at graduate and PhD levels since 1995.

Awards and Honors: He is an elected Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society (1999), the Indian Geophysical Union (2011), the Indian Academy of Sciences (2022), the Indian National Science Academy - INSA (2024), the International Artificial Intelligence Industry Alliance (AIIA), and was a member of the New York Academy of Science during 1995-96. He received Dr Balakrishna Memorial Award from the Andhra Pradesh Akademi of Sciences in 1995, the Krishnan Gold Medal from the Indian Geophysical Union in 2002, and 'The Georges Matheron Award-2011 (with Lecturership)" of the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (IAMG), IAMG Certificate of Appreciation - 2018, and the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing (GRSS) Distinguished Lecturer (DL) for 2020-2024. He is a Member of the Honors and Recognition Committee of the Americal Geophysical Union (AGU) for 2022-25. He is the Founding Chairman of the Bangalore Section IEEE GRSS Chapter. He was on the Editorial Boards of Computers & Geosciences (Elsevier), Frontiers: Environmental Informatics, and Mathematical Geosciences (Springer).
