Summary
A. K. Tyagi completed his MSc degree in 1985 from Meerut University. He joined BARC as Scientific Officer (C) in 1986 after completing one year orientation course from BARC Training School. He completed his PhD in chemical sciences from the University of Mumbai in 1992.  Following this, he pursued a post-doctoral position at the Max Planck Institute for Solid State Research in Stuttgart, Germany (1995-1996). Presently, Dr. Tyagi is the Director of the Chemistry Group and Bio-Science Group at BARC and Distinguished Scientist, DAE.

Academic and Research Achievements
Dr. Tyagi’s research is a unique blend of strong fundamental and applied components. Representative hitherto unknown functional materials prepared by him are based tunable band-gap materials, excellent oxygen storage capacitors, tunable-dielectrics systems, new lead-free electro-active materials, and inorganic-organic hybrids. His research on next generation Li/Na ion battery materials led to transfer of technologies to several companies for commercialization. He made significant contributions to several important projects at BARC. His extensive research output comprises over 650 publications, 12 books and 25 book chapters. So far he has supervised 35 PhD students.

Other Contributions
He was a member of INSA-National Committee for International Union of Crystallography (2016-2019). During this period, a detailed status report on Crystallography in India was compiled and submitted to INSA. He is deeply associated with the Academic Programmes of several institutes and universities in India. He serves as a member of government funding agencies in India. Also, he has organized various international and national level symposia and workshops for the benefits of young students and researchers. He has delivered more than 450 invited talks and keynote lecture. He has made rich contributions towards science popularization in India. He is presently President of Society for Materials Chemistry, which has a Pan-India presence and engaged in promoting materials research in India.
