Introduction

The Union was admitted to ISC (formerly known as ICSU) in April,1947. Since its formation, The Union has remained a focal point for international cooperation in crystallography. It has 21 Commissions, which are concerned with either a principal publishing activity or a major topic or field of concern to crystallographers. The second group of Commissions organize many international projects concerned with the establishment of internationally acceptable standards or methods of procedure. Introduction
The mission of the International Astronomical Union (IAU), founded in 1919, is to promote and safeguard the science of astronomy in all its aspects through international cooperation. IAU activities range from the definition of fundamental astronomical and dynamical constants and unambiguous astronomical nomenclature, rapid dissemination of new discoveries, organization of international observing campaigns, and promotion of educational activities in astronomy to early informal discussions of possible future international large-scale facilities. Introduction

Established in 1919. Dedicated to scientific study of Earth and applications of the knowledge gained by the such studies to the needs of the society, such as mineral resources, reduction of effects of natural hazards and environmental preservation. The objectives of IUGG are the promotion and coordination of physical, chemical and mathematical studies of the Earth and its environment in space. These studies include the shape of the Earth, its gravitational and magnetic fields, the dynamics of the Earth as a whole and of its component parts, Earth’s internal structure, composition and tectonics, the generation of magmas, volcanism and rock formation, the hydrological cycle including
snow and ice, all aspects of ocean, the atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere and solar-terrestrial relations, and analogous problems associated with the Moon and other planets. Union activities embrace studies of the Earth by artificial satellites and other techniques for deploying instruments at high altitude.

The Union comprises eight semi-autonomous Associations, each responsible for a specific range of topics or themes within the overall scope of the Union’s activities and each with a sub-structure.

Introduction
The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) was founded in 1961. The objectives of the Union are to encourage the study of geoscientific problems, particularly those of world-wide significance; facilitate international and interdisciplinary cooperation in geology and its related sciences; provide continuity to such cooperation; support and provide scientific sponsorship to the quadrennial International Geological Congress. Established in 1957, SCOR was the first permanent interdisciplinary body formed by the International Council of Scientific Unions, now called the ISC (formerly known as ICSU). Recognition that the scientific problems of the ocean require a truly interdisciplinary approach was embodied in plans for the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958, and the same approach was adopted by SCOR from its beginning. SCOR took the responsibility from 1957 to bring together ocean scientists from all parts of the world, through a variety of mechanisms, to advance ocean science and overcome barriers to understanding the ocean.

Introduction

The Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) was originally establishned as an Inter-Union Commission following a Resolution adopted at the XI General Assemnly of ISC (formerly known as ICSU) at Bombay in 1966. It was modified by the 14th General Assembly of ISC at Helsinki in 1972 to a Special Committee and by the 17th General Assembly in 1978 to a Scientific Committee. Its principal tasks are :

1. . To promote international interdisciplinary programmes in solar terrestrial physics and to orgnise and coordinate such programmes of interest to and approved by atleast two of the following bodies i.e. IAU., IUGG, IUPAP, URSI and COSPAR;
2. To define the data relating to these programmes that should be exchanged through the World Data Centres;
3. To provide such advice as may be required by the ISC bodies and World Data Centres concerned with these programmes;
4. To work with other ISC bodies in the coordination of symposia in solar terrestrial physics, especially on topics related to SCOSTEP’s programmes.

NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR FUTURE EARTH

Introduction

ISC (formerly known as ICSU) initiated a new, 10-year international research initiative, named “Future Earth” from 2015. Future Earth (FE) is a merger of IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme), WCRP (World Climate Research Programme), IHDP (International Human Dimensions Programme) and DIVERSITAS. The goal of Future Earth is to develop the knowledge required for societies worldwide to face challenges posed by global environmental change and to identify and implement solutions and opportunities for a transition to global sustainability. It has five global hubs which will function as a single entity, and are located in Canada, France, Japan, Sweden and United States. This will be complemented by various regional offices spread across the globe. The Future Earth South Asia Regional Office has been established at Divecha Centre for Climate Change (DCCC), IISc., Bangaluru which would cover the region including SAARC countries and some of the Indian Ocean island countries. . The main focus of the regional office is to promote scientific cooperation between India and neighboring countries in Future Earth related activities.

CODATA is concerned with all types of qualitative data resulting from experimental measurements or observations in the physical, biological, geological and astronomical sciences. Particular emphasis is given to data management problems common to different scientific disciplines and to data used outside the field in which they were generated. The general objectives are:

-The improvement of the quality and accessibility of data, as well as the methods by which data are acquired, managed and analysed;
-The facilitation of international cooperation among those collecting, organising and usng data; and
-The promotion of an increased awareness in the scientific and technical community of the importance of these activities.
