INTERNATIONAL UNION OF CRYSTALLOGRAPHY (IUCr) www.iucr.org

Introduction

The Union was admitted to ISC (formerly known as ICSU) in April,1947. Since its formation, The Union has remained a focal point for international cooperation in crystallography. It has 21 Commissions, which are concerned with either a principal publishing activity or a major topic or field of concern to crystallographers. The second group of Commissions organize many international projects concerned with the establishment of internationally acceptable standards or methods of procedure. Also they organize specialist meetings or short courses of instructions for young scientists. IUCr has following objectives:

-To promote international cooperation in crystallography to contribute to the advancement of all aspects of crystallography;
-To promote international publication of crystallographic research;
-To facilitate standardization of methods, units, nomenclature and symbols used in crystallography and
-To form a focus for the relations of crystallography to other sciences.

INTERNATIONAL UNION OF PURE AND APPLIED CHEMISTRY (IUPAC) (www.iucr.org)

Introduction:

Established in 1919. IUPAC is recognized as the international authority on chemical nomenclature, terminology, symbols, units, atomic weights and related topics. Its reports and recommendations on these matters are generally accepted as definitive and often from the basis for drafting regulations relating to chemical manufacturing, international commerce and matters relevant to food, health and the environment. The following are its objectives:

-to promote the continuing cooperation amongst the chemists of the Member Countries.
-to study topics of international importance to Pure and Applied Chemistry which need regulation, standardisation and codification;
-to cooperate with other international organisations which deal with the topics of chemical nature;
-to contribute to the advancement of Pure and Applied Chemistry in all its aspects.
-The International Union of Pure & Applied Chemistry serves to advance the worldwide aspects of the chemical sciences and to contribute to the application of chemistry in the service of human kind. As a scientific, international, non-governmental and objective body, IUPAC can address many global issues involving the chemical sciences.

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON OCEANIC RESEARCH (SCOR) (www.scor-int.org)

Introduction

The Scientific Committee on Oceanic Research (SCOR) was established by the Executive Board of ISC (formerly known as ICSU), in July 1957 to further international scientific activitity in all branches of oceanic research. To do so, SCOR examines problems and identifies elements that would benefit from enhanced international action, including improvement of scientific methods, design of critical experiments and measurement programmes, and relevant aspects of science plicy; foster recognistion of individual marine scientists and laboratories; presents the view of marine scientists to the appropriate international community; and cooperates with national and international organisations concerned with scientific aspects of ocean research and inter-related activities.

NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON
OCEANIC RESEARCH (SCOR)

Established in 1957, SCOR was the first permanent interdisciplinary body formed by the International Council of Scientific Unions, now called the ISC (formerly known as ICSU). Recognition that the scientific problems of the ocean require a truly interdisciplinary approach was embodied in plans for the International Geophysical Year of 1957-1958, and the same approach was adopted by SCOR from its beginning. SCOR took the responsibility from 1957 to bring together ocean scientists from all parts of the world, through a variety of mechanisms, to advance ocean science and overcome barriers to understanding the ocean.

COMMITTEE ON SPACE RESEARCH (COSPAR) www.cosparhq.cnes.fr

Introduction

The Committee on Space Research (COSPAR) was established by ISC (formerly known as ICSU) in 1958 as an interdisciplinary body concerned the progress on an international scale of all kinds of scientific investigations carried out with space vehicles, rockets and balloons. COSPAR’s objectives are to promote on an international level scientific research in Space, with emphasis on the exchange of results, information and opinions, and to provide a forum, open to all scientists for the discussion of problems that may affect scientific space research.

SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE ON SOLAR-TERRESTRIAL PHYSICS (SCOSTEP) www.scostep.org

Introduction

The Scientific Committee on Solar-Terrestrial Physics (SCOSTEP) was originally establishned as an Inter-Union Commission following a Resolution adopted at the XI General Assemnly of ISC (formerly known as ICSU) at Bombay in 1966. It was modified by the 14th General Assembly of ISC at Helsinki in 1972 to a Special Committee and by the 17th General Assembly in 1978 to a Scientific Committee. Its principal tasks are :

1. . To promote international interdisciplinary programmes in solar terrestrial physics and to orgnise and coordinate such programmes of interest to and approved by atleast two of the following bodies i.e. IAU., IUGG, IUPAP, URSI and COSPAR;
2. To define the data relating to these programmes that should be exchanged through the World Data Centres;
3. To provide such advice as may be required by the ISC bodies and World Data Centres concerned with these programmes;
4. To work with other ISC bodies in the coordination of symposia in solar terrestrial physics, especially on topics related to SCOSTEP’s programmes.

NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR FUTURE EARTH

Introduction

ISC (formerly known as ICSU) initiated a new, 10-year international research initiative, named “Future Earth” from 2015. Future Earth (FE) is a merger of IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme), WCRP (World Climate Research Programme), IHDP (International Human Dimensions Programme) and DIVERSITAS. The goal of Future Earth is to develop the knowledge required for societies worldwide to face challenges posed by global environmental change and to identify and implement solutions and opportunities for a transition to global sustainability. It has five global hubs which will function as a single entity, and are located in Canada, France, Japan, Sweden and United States. This will be complemented by various regional offices spread across the globe. The Future Earth South Asia Regional Office has been established at Divecha Centre for Climate Change (DCCC), IISc., Bangaluru which would cover the region including SAARC countries and some of the Indian Ocean island countries. . The main focus of the regional office is to promote scientific cooperation between India and neighboring countries in Future Earth related activities.

INTERNATIONAL UNION OF BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES (IUBS) (www.iubs.org)

Introduction

The International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) was created in 1919. Its objectives are: to promote the study of biological sciences; to initiate, facilitate and coordinate research capacity building and other scientific activities, which necessitate international and interdisciplinary cooperation; to ensure the discussion and dissemination of the results of cooperative research, and especially those of IUBS scientific programs; to promote the organization of international conferences and to assist the publication of their reports.

The IUBS scientific programmes are of an interdisciplinary nature. These programmes include among others, integrative biology, biodiversity (DIVERSITAS), bioethics, biotechnology, bio-indicators, biological education, biological nomenclature, biosystematics, reproductive biology and aquaculture and biological complexity.

COMMITTEE ON DATA FOR SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY (CODATA) http://www.codata.org/

Introduction

The Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) was set up by the XI General Assemby of ISC (formerly known as ICSU) held at Bombay during January 1966. CODATA is concerned with all types of qualitative data resulting from experimental measurements or observations in the physical, biological, geological and astronomical sciences. Particular emphasis is given to data management problems common to different scientific disciplines and to data used outside the field in which they were generated. The general objectives are:

-The improvement of the quality and accessibility of data, as well as the methods by which data are acquired, managed and analysed;
-The facilitation of international cooperation among those collecting, organising and usng data; and
-The promotion of an increased awareness in the scientific and technical community of the importance of these activities.
