Dr. Shekhar C. Mande

Prof. Shekhar C. Mande is an eminent Indian scientist and scientific administrator and currently serves as President of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). He is a distinguished structural and computational biologist with a strong background in molecular biophysics. He is a distinguished professor at the Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune. Prof. Mande earned his PhD from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bangalore, and carried out postdoctoral research in the Netherlands and the United States. His scientific work has focused on protein structure, computational biology, and genome-wide analysis of proteins, with notable contributions to understanding infectious diseases, including tuberculosis.
Over the course of his career, he has held several prominent leadership positions, including Director of the National Centre for Cell Science (NCCS), Pune, and Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Government of India, and also served as Secretary of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR). Prof. Mande has played an important role in shaping India’s science policy and research ecosystem. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology and is a Fellow of all major Indian science academies. Through his research excellence and institutional leadership, he has made significant contributions to the advancement of science in India.
